7 Quick Takes

------ One ------

Somehow we have avoided the stomach flu reeking havoc among our friends. All four families in our homeschooling co-op were down for the count. At soccer this week, another friend's kid began throwing up on the field. Miraculously, we've been spared. I don't question it; I just give thanks.

------ Two ------

So I've been packing all weekend to leave for our trip to Ohio to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family, but most importantly, to attend my sister Cate's wedding. I am happy and excited and, of course being an older sister, nervous for my sister and her fiance as they enter into marriage. They are a strong, joyful, fun-loving, Catholic couple. I thank God for blessing me with them and look forward to watching their family grow throughout the years.

------ Three ------

Of course, having the first of my six younger siblings get married, right on the heels of my latest birthday, has definitely made it clear to me that I am officially in adulthood. You would think the three kids, the gray hair, and the minivan would have been sufficient, but nothing like a little sis getting married to make you feel your age.

------ Four ------

One week until Advent begins. I just began my Christmas shopping this weekend, woefully behind schedule for my hyper-Type A self. With the state of the national economy and the state of our household economy, I am trying to keep the costs low this year. So far, the Lord has provided beautifully. Paul desperately wants a train set and skates, along with about a hundred other things, but these items top his list. Instead of rushing to check craigslist, ebay, and Goodwill, I have been doing some praying, simply asking the Lord specifically to provide for the kids this Christmas.

On visit to Grammy's house a few weeks ago, my mother-in-law told me that a family friend had dropped off some of their old toys for the kids. Not one, but two train sets in pristine condition! And, you guessed it, skates.

------ Five ------

Speaking of Advent, if you are looking for an easy, fun way to help your family prepare for Christ's birth, check out the Holy Heroes Advent Adventure. It is a free service that sends you a daily e-mail with that day's activities - a short video on Advent topics and saints, an audio link to a decade of the Joyful Mysteries, and downloads of coloring pictures, word searches, and Jesse tree ornaments.

------ Six ------

This is for my Virginia readers. For the last two weekends, our family has been involved in helping to an effort to make "Choose Life" license plates available here in Virginia. The plates would be a visible, clear pro-life message to drivers everywhere, but most importantly, the majority portion of the proceeds from the annual fees would go to support pregnancy resource centers in Virginia. Similar efforts in other states have been very effective at raising funds for pregnancy resource centers.

To see how you can help in this effort by pre-paying for a "Choose Life" plate, visit the Richmond Coalition for Life's website.

Okay...hope these quick takes hold you over as I leave for my family's home in Ohio, otherwise known as the Internet Dead Zone.

Home as Haven

Our parish mother's group hosted a great speaker last night, Abby Sasscer, from Home as Haven apostolate. Her mission is to help families declutter and simplify their lives, helping them grow in the virtues of simplicity, holy detachment, trust in Divine Providence, and order within their domestic church.

Her talk was beautiful, inspiring, and totally practical. Best of all, she has a free workbook, Simplifying Your Domestic Church, you can download here.

Heavenly Logistics

Paul: "Did Jesus die on the cross?"

Momma: "Yes, Paul. Jesus died so you could spend forever in Heaven with Him."

Paul thinks it over. He decides, "I don't want to be with Jesus. I want to be with St. Paul in Heaven."

Momma: "He'll be there, too."

Paul wonders: "But how will I find St. Paul in Heaven?"

On the Eve of My 29th Birthday

My major concern as I embark on my last year of my 20s...stomach flu.

All of the families in our homeschooling co-op came down with a yucky flu bug over the weekend. So far, we've been spared, but I am becoming a little paranoid. I'll probably spend my birthday feeding the kids saltines and banning all activities involving jumping or spinning or other vomit-inducing movements. Oh yeah, I'm going out with bang.

Respect, Tolerance, Love - except for Christians.

Supporters of same-sex marriage harrass an eldery woman and trample her cross at a rally in California. I found the "Marriage is a symbol of love" sign especially ironic.

No, I've not moved to Malta.

Let me put to rest any rumors. My lengthy absence from active blogging lately is not due to a recent move to Malta following the election results, not that it wasn't seriously considered. Some folks promise to move to Canada if they are upset with the country's leadership; we tend to opt for Malta in our rhetoric. And why Malta? Official religion: Catholic. Official language: English (and Maltese). Abortion: Illegal. Plus, it's in a beautiful island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Hmmmm...maybe we need to consider this move again...

The prosaic truth behind my neglected blog is an unromantic head cold. Sadly, the cold is still lingering so no brilliant insights or humorous anecdotes yet. Here's some pictures to hold you over.

There really isn't anything to say today...

except to remind you to make your travel plans to attend the March for Life on January 22nd. We need record-breaking attendance to send a loud message to the new President and Congress that they really don't want to spend their political capital in continuing to fight an ugly culture war over the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA). Let's show them we are ready for a real fight!

My Electoral Map - 269/269

My picks were primarily based on creating the most exciting scenerio possible - within the realm of reason - though I do think Obama is going to win Indiana. What do you think is going to happen tonight? And how late are we going to be up?

GOTV with Paul, Lucy, and Jane

Sunday, November 2, 2008

I'm officially ready for the election to be over.

I sorted some laundry this morning, and after a few unfortunate tissue episode last week, carefully checked all pants and shirt pockets for tissues, change, Halloween candy, crayons, and the like.

I just pulled my first load out of the dryer. On the back of Lucy's white sweater is the baked-on remains of a McCain-Palin sticker.
