The Weekly Headliner

Congratulations to Kathy, author of last week's winning caption:

Lucy: Do you know where we are going Paul?
Paul: No.
Lucy: Well, let's stop for directions.
Paul: Lucy, you're so silly. Men don't stop and ask for directions!

This week's challenge comes from our recent visit to Grandma and Grandpa in Ohio.

For Your Amusement

For those of you who haven't been introduced to my favorite blog, here is an opportunity for a sneak-peek into the mind of a mother with an infant. Echo...echo...

Warning: Do NOT read at work. Reading this blog will result in uproarious, crazed laughter that will draw the unwanted attention of co-workers and employers to your non-work related activities.

MIA

I know I've been MIA this week from blogging. We've had quite a week here at the Bremberg household. Let's just say it has been a really challenging Holy Week.

And I'm afraid the blogging may continue to be light for the next week. We are leaving for Ohio tonight to visit the Cordonnier clan. (Nothing like a nine hour drive with two toddler and a newborn to really cap off Good Friday.) Unfortunately for all of you, my parents' house is a kind of Internet twilight zone. They have serious problems getting service so I don't know if I'll be able to blog next week. Hopefully, the stars will align and there will actually be some kind of Internet access at the house. If so, I will be sure to let you know how Paul, Lucy, and Jane are doing on the farm!

The Weekly Headliner

Since there was such a wide range of submissions for last week's caption, I simply couldn't choose just one. In fact, I had real difficulties in narrowing it down to just two. Good job, guys and gals!

Last Week's Winner: "...He pours gifts on His beloved while they slumber..." So beautiful. Congratulations, Aunt Katy!

Honorable Mention: "Winnie on the lap and Poo in the back." Not exactly beautiful, but very funny. A strong showing two weeks running, Uncle Josh.

Mommy's Blogging Buddy

We're offering an inside view of the creation of Ordinary Time with a picture from the computer camera. It's sorta like Rush's dittocam, but with cutier subjects.

See Jane blog. She must be reading some of the comments to her latest picture. Jane says, "My digestive function are nobody's business - except Mommy's. Keep the clean diapers coming, Mommy. And, Aunt Cate, is something wrong with my weight? Hello, body image issues!"

Time flies when you are having fun!

Believe it or not, it has been a whole year since I launched Ordinary Time.

So here I go. I’ve taken the plunge into the world of blogging. For a stay-at-home mom of two, whose days are full of diapers, drool, and very dirty laundry, this blog will most likely represent the height of technological prowess in my life. Unless you count programming the VCR to record Sesame Street each day. Which I don’t.

I hope this blog fosters a sense of closeness with family and friends. I hope it becomes a forum to share ideas about Faith and family life and politics and literature, all the things I love. And hopefully, this blog will be a glimpse into my heart and mind for my children someday, replacing all those baby books I really did mean to buy and fill out.

I feel that this blog has become just what I wanted - and needed - it to be in my life. This blog has provided me a forum for bragging about my kids, musing over new ideas, spouting off about politics, reflecting on my faith, and connecting with family and friends. For a mom who spends the majority of her waking time with toddlers and babies, being able to connect with actual adults has been a lifesaver some days!

I hope reading Ordinary Time over the past year has been as fulfilling, encouraging, inspiring, intriguing, and just plain fun as writing it has been for me. Thank you all for taking the time to listen to me and to even talk back sometimes!

In honor of the day, I've put together a Top Ten Posts list. Some are funny, some are serious, some are spiritual, but they are all just from an ordinary mom with an ordinary husband and a few ordinary children - which of course adds up to one extraordinary life.

10. The Many Sides of Lucy or Midwest Mother/East Coast Father

9. Will the real Paul please stand up?

8. Perpetual Motion

7. This ain't polite society... so let's talk religion and politics!

6. The Importance of Sacramentals

5. They grow up so fast... and the ensuing responses at The Very Young and Restless

Enter Colonel Hathi

A new character has entered Paul's world - Colonel Hathi, the military-minded leader of the elephant herd in The Jungle Book. Paul spends a significant portion of his time these days pretending to be Colonel Hathi and has even commandeered several "props." Take a look.

While The Jungle Book has been a wildly successful hit in the Bremberg household, The Fox and the Hound did not fare so well with the critics this morning. Intense sobbing and desperate cries for "Momma" commenced within the first five minutes of the movie. It had slipped my mind that the Momma Fox was killed in the opening scene. Oops.

I hoped that the happy, idyllic "Best Friends" scene between Todd and Copper that followed that horrific start would help shift the attitude in the room, but unfortunately it did not. Paul continued to ask where the Momma Fox was and announce that the baby fox was "looking for his mommy on his own." As the first hunting scene began, Paul turned to me with teary eyes and quivering lips, "Maybe we watch something else, Momma."

I guess it takes more than a toy double-barrel shotgun that even smokes (thanks to Uncle Josh) to win Paul over to the joys of hunting. I did have my doubts about Paul's innate hunting instincts when he picked up the shotgun for the first time and held it out backwards. After a few weeks of practice, he finally holds the gun correctly, but still generally refers to it as a sword. Lucy, on the other hand, seems to be a natural. See picture below.

Vote for Me!

Unbeknownest to me, someone nominated Ordinary Time in the "Best New Catholic Blog" category for the 2008 Catholic Blog Awards. Thank you to the kind reader who nominated me (Christine? Josh? Abby?)! As for the rest of you, go over to the Catholic Blog Awards and vote for me. Make Paul, Lucy, and Jane famous!

The Land of Fruit and Nuts

Just in case anyone forget, California sent out a reminder that is really is the Land of the Fruits and Nuts. On Tuesday a California appellate court ruled in a case brought against a homeschooling family stating that "parents do not have a constitutional right to home school their children." The court seems to have ruled that parents would have to credentialed teachers in order to home school their children. Homeschooling groups are promising to appeal the ruling to the California State Supreme Court. Let's hope the California's Supreme Court justices recognizes that parents, not the state, should hold the ultimate right and responsibility to educate their children.

Jane's Diet

I like to eat when the sun hasn't quite risen yet
and then again when I decide to really get up
and then a little later
and then in the afternoon,

and a little while before supper
and a little while after
and when the moon comes up
and a few times later in the evening,

and then again
when it's still
and dark
and me and Mom
are the only ones up.

Except for Dad.

The Weekly Headliner

I'm going to try to start a new weekly feature here at Ordinary Time - the Weekly Headliner. Since photos of the kids are so popular, every Monday I'll be sure to post a new picture for everyone's enjoyment. Then my readers get to supply me with a caption for the photo. Let's get those creative juices flowing! Here's this week's feature photo:
